London: Crisis at Christmas – Volunteering with Rough Sleepers

2014-12-27 15.36.23If there’s one thing you should really do at Christmas in London?! It’s volunteer for Crisis – the charity which supports homeless people all year round.

All year round they run day centres with some of their guests being referred to 24/7 rough sleepers outreach centre.

This year – although I assisted in various forms for the past two months, I decided to do a morning shift of 7:45am – 3:45pm today.

The centre is solely run on well over 150 volunteers per shift at times and they run services such as health care, podiatry, hairdressing, IT, housing help and advice and most importantly – 3 meals a day and a place to sleep for 200 people.

It’s by no means an easy job but it’s varied, fulfilling, emotional and interesting all at once… The volunteers are all so positive and warm which really sets the tone for the centre.

I met some of life’s greatest people – greatest characters ( both volunteers and guests) they made me laugh, smile and cry and I genuinely hope this isn’t the end of the road for them..

Tomorrow Crisis close their doors and despite temporarily helping people unfortunately they can’t fund a 24/7 centre all year round. ( but do run day care centres!)

I’d urge you to take part next year! In fact there’s some shifts still available tomorrow! If not – donate £21.62 which does a whole lot or for just more information about the organisation.
