Visiting the island of Mauritius for a destination wedding

Country: Mauritius

Region: Flic en Flac

Flight Time: We flew via Dubai, each flight was roughly 6 hours 50 one way and 6 hours the other.

Airline: Emirates
Flying From: London Heathrow ( Via Dubai)
Time of year: March 2017
Duration:9 Days

I was lucky enough to attend another Destination Wedding to see my cousin and his gorgeous wife, my friend, get married. With one of the couple being half Mauritian, it made perfect sense to hold this auspicious occasion on this island of paradise in the middle of the Indian Ocean and what a way to tick off a bucket list entry! Here’s my tips on being a wedding guest abroad here.

Leaving from our closest airport, Heathrow, we started our journey off in the No.1 Traveller Lounge at Terminal 3. Service and food was great and it’s probably the best way for you to spend idle time waiting for your gate to open.

We boarded seamlessly and had pre – arranged some exit seats ( which I find vital!) – Ask for these at the desk when checking in.  Teamed with the fabulous Chloe – one of the emirates staff, I had one of the best flights ever, to Dubai.  We had a slight concern that our connecting flight from Dubai was relatively soon and our flight had arrived slightly delayed, but if there’s a substantial number of you connecting on the same airline, I have it on good authority that they’ll wait for you! However you may want to avoid this situation altogether and choose to opt for a 2 / 3 hour layover in Dubai, or an overnight layover and get out an explore the phenomenon that is Dubai.

The flight from Dubai to Mauritius wasn’t as amazing, but 6 hours and 50 minutes later, we had arrived at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport ( MRU)  and were picked up by transfers company, Lux Resorts.

Our resort was situated in Flic en Flac on the west of the island, which is roughly a 45 min – 1 hour journey away the airport

We were staying at Sun Resorts, 5* Sugar Beach Hotel & Spa based on Flic en Flac beach in Wolmar.

When we arrived we were warmly greeted by the staff, where a bell was rung to announce our arrival. Our bags were taken off us, and one of the staff took us to a cool area, handed us an amazing cold towel, a refreshing drink and comfortable chairs to complete all our check – in details.

Whilst waiting for our room to be ready we wandered down to the beach, looking around this stunning resort and then into the restaurant, onsite, Tides, for a well overdue lunch.

The resort exteriors were beautiful, think Palm trees, multiple pools and of course direct beach access providing a stunning background, this was also where the wedding was going to be, and we could see why!

Our rooms were situated in the very grand Manor House which was a great location, as we weren’t too far from the pools, from the main breakfast room and most importantly, the bar! Lol.

The room had it’s own balcony, overlooking garden view and amenities in the bathroom with complimentary sarongs to take home, and use of a plush bathrobe and slippers.

We were also treated to a daily turndown service, with the most beautiful towel displays by our lovely maid, Kajul.

Although a beautiful hotel with stunning exteriors and some great staff, I would say that the resort is closer to a 4 star than a 5 star. Just some of the services and food lacked 5 star detail and attentiveness that you would normally expect at a 5 star resort, however these people went above and beyond, Rajoo, Kajul, Mohini, Quincy,  – They were world class!

Our first night the wedding couple arranged for us to go to a bar in town, for our exclusive use and with our team of DJs to entertain ourselves for the evening, we had a great night and a lot of the locals popped their heads in to party with us.

The following day we had an All White BBQ scheduled at VillaSun Apartments and Villas, if you want self catering in the area, these are a GREAT option and hosted all of the remaining of our wedding party, including the bride and groom.2017-03-29 18.05.22 HDR

We spent the next day in pure relaxation back at Sugar Beach, with fresh coconut water and then headed over to Citronella’s ( one of the restaurants on – site)  for some lunch, just as a downpour of rain hit! So not all sunshine, but the rain was short lived, thankfully.

The next day was the main attraction, the wedding!  An amazing ceremony held just outside the manor house with the backdrop of the beach. It truly was a beautiful ceremony and was followed by a stunning reception at Citronellas and on the beach itself. The evening ended with us all sending off lanterns which looked absolutely magical. A truly stunning day.

But there was more to come,  the next day, we had traditional henna done, a beautiful intricate design placed on the hands or feet in the run up to a wedding ceremony. It then drops off throughout the day, once it dries to leave a lighter colour underneath. 2017-04-01 11.42.09

Whilst waiting for ours to dry, we took a taxi to the capital, Port Louis, which was about 45 mins away. Lots of restaurants and shops and a buzzy feel to it. We ate at the stunning Labourdonnais Hotel. Service was impeccable, food was great and inside the interiors were incredibly stylish. We had a walk round the town and then finished off the afternoon with a well deserved and delicious Gelato.

The next morning we took part in a traditional Tamil ceremony, which you can read more about here. It was great to be exposed to such a beautiful culture and to see things happen differently, we also got to wear some stunning outfits in the day and the evening.

The next day, we headed into town for some Roti on the roadside – an absolute must! Make sure you visit Roti aka Vinoda which was only about 35 rupees which is less than a £1! We caught up with some of our friends on the beach and then headed back to ours.

Our hotel put on an event that evening, with some stands from Veuve Cliquot and Pink Pigeon Rum, we decided to buy two bottles of Veuve, and with a bottle, you get a ride on a giant rubber dinghy and enjoy a drink with the sunset in the background, I mean, who wouldn’t! One of the staff was the sommelier for the resort and he was great with our group. It was a great way to end the evening and was probably our favourite day and evening in the hotel.

Our final day before flying home was spent driving up as a convoy to Grand Baie in the North of the island to enjoy a Wedding beach day.  We took over the small beach, played some music, had some drinks and some food, all headed out to do some water sports, with these guys using the Sea Bobs for the first time. Quality Time in the sunshine!

As the sun set it was time to leave to go back to the hotel and start packing! Needless to say we were thankful experiencing a piece of paradise, but sad to leave everyone and return home. I want to say a MASSIVE Congratulations to Mr & Mrs Douglas – You’re amazing and your wedding was absolutely brilliant!

Here’s a video of my trip, hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed living it!

I’d definitely return to Mauritius, most people see it as a honeymoon island, but it has so much more to offer, such as Tea plantations, sugarcane fields, Chamarel with it’s coloured earth, the rum factory! I’ll be returning without the wedding schedule to try and explore more of this beautiful island and to take some tips from our Mauritian friends!

Check out my 10 tips on how to be a great wedding guest abroad and how amazing attending a Tamil ceremony in Mauritius was.

Where did you visit in Mauritius? What other things did you do whilst there? Do let me know, so I can prepare the next trip!
